When McDonald's pulled out of Iceland during the 2008 financial crisis, Metro stepped in to fill the golden-arches-shaped hole in the national fast-food landscape. The chain has since become an Icelandic institution in its own right, and the Akureyri location in the Hotel Kea building gives the capital of the north its own reliable burger fix.

The Hotel Kea location puts Metro right in the heart of Akureyri, on the main street with views towards Akureyrarkirkja (the church on the hill). It is central, accessible, and open late enough to serve as a post-activity dinner stop.
