Lobster Hut

There is something deeply satisfying about eating some of the best seafood in Reykjavik from a cart on the street. Lobster Hut strips away everything unnecessary — the tablecloths, the wine list, the markup — and gives you excellent Icelandic langoustine in the most direct way possible.

The Food

The lobster sandwich is the reason to come, and it is exceptional. Fresh langoustine in lemon mayonnaise, served on good bread — simple, clean, and packed with flavour. The lobster soup is the other essential order, served hot with a swirl of whipped cream that sounds odd but works beautifully, adding richness to the already luxurious broth.

The menu is deliberately tiny. Lobster sandwich, lobster soup, lobster salad, and drinks. That is it. This kind of focus is a feature, not a limitation — everything on offer has been refined through repetition.

The Experience

This is a food cart parked on Kalkofnsvegur, a short walk from Harpa concert hall. There is no seating. You order, you wait, you receive your food, and you find somewhere to eat it — a bench, a wall, or standing right there. In summer, with the sun hanging low over the harbour, it is one of the most pleasant ways to eat in the city.

The owner is known to close early in bad weather, which is understandable when your workplace has no walls. This is very much a fair-weather operation.

Why It Matters

In a city where a lobster dinner at a proper restaurant can easily exceed ISK 8,000, getting the same quality ingredient for a third of the price from a street cart is the kind of value that travellers should know about. The langoustine is fresh, the preparation is skilled, and the experience is memorably Reykjavik.

Practical Tips

Check that the cart is actually there before making a special trip — weather-dependent hours mean it can close unexpectedly. Best in summer. Bring cash as a backup, though cards are usually accepted. No reservations, obviously.
