Let us be honest from the start: the Viking Village is a tourist attraction. It knows it, you know it, and nobody is pretending otherwise. But within that honest framework, Fjorukrain in Hafnarfjordur delivers something that is genuinely entertaining -- a Viking-themed feast in a longhouse setting, served by staff in period costume, with singing Valkyries and more mead than is strictly advisable.

The Experience

Dining at Fjorukrain is not about the food alone. It is about the performance. You enter a recreated Viking longhouse -- low ceilings, rough timber, flickering candlelight -- and are seated at long communal tables. The feast arrives on wooden platters: smoked lamb, fresh fish, dark rye bread, butter, and various traditional accompaniments. Mead and Icelandic beer flow freely. At intervals, costumed performers appear to sing, tell stories, and generally ensure that nobody sits in silence.

The whole thing could be unbearable if it took itself too seriously, but it does not. There is a playfulness to the proceedings that makes it fun rather than forced. The staff clearly enjoy what they do, and that energy is infectious.

The Food

Beneath the theatrics, the food is respectable. The lamb is good -- properly cooked and genuinely Icelandic. The fish is fresh. The rye bread is dense and flavourful in the traditional style. You will not confuse this with a Michelin-starred tasting menu, but nor should you. This is feast food, designed to be eaten communally and enthusiastically. It succeeds on those terms.

The portions are generous. You will not leave hungry.

Practical Tips

Book in advance, especially during summer. The Viking Village seats up to 350 guests and handles group bookings frequently, so weekends can fill up. The setting works particularly well for families and groups who want a memorable evening rather than a quiet dinner.

Hafnarfjordur is a 15-minute drive from central Reykjavik, or about 30 minutes by bus. The town itself is worth exploring -- it is smaller, quieter, and has a harbour-front charm that Reykjavik has largely lost.

Approach the Viking Village with the right expectations and you will have a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Approach it hoping for culinary revelation and you will be disappointed. It is dinner and a show, and on that basis, it delivers.
